Patients Council, Royal Edinburgh Hospital
The Patients Council is an Independent Collective Advocacy organisation for people who use, or have used, services at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital. It works to represent the voice of patients and former patients.
Service Description
The Patients Council promote the human rights of patients and encourage the improvements and developments in mental health services that patients would like to see. They do this by holding regular group advocacy meetings on all wards and passing these views on to the hospital management and other statutory agencies.
The implementation of the Mental Health (Care and Treatment) (Scotland) Act 2003 gives every person with mental illness, a learning disability, or personality disorder, the right to access independent advocacy services, including collective or group advocacy.
The Patients Council provides independent Collective Advocacy which focuses on issues which affect more than one person. Examples of this includes things like the quality of food, quality of the environment as well as wider issues such as building a new hospital. Examples of this include things like the quality of patient/staff relationships and rights-based care and treatment.
