Winter cycling in Midlothian: Top tips
Cycling in Midlothian in winter can feel daunting: dark paths, cold and changeable weather, shorter days. But a little preparation makes it safe, comfortable, and enjoyable.
Here Kirsty from Cycling UK shares her top tips to continue making the most of cycling in dark or chilly weather, and a kit checklist to make sure you’re prepared.
The more you ride, the easier winter cycling becomes – starting is the hardest part!

Top tips
- Be visible
Use strong front (>1000 lumens for dark paths) and rear lights, and wear bright or reflective clothing. Rural paths, like the railway paths, can be very dark. - Dress smart
Avoid cotton; merino or synthetic base layers wick sweat away from your skin, helping you stay warmer. Waterproof gloves, socks, and a waterproof and breathable jacket make a huge difference. Buffs are great under your helmet or around your neck. Layer so you can adjust as you ride. - Carry wisely
Use a pannier rather than a backpack for comfort and to let your jacket do its job. Waterproof items inside your bag if the bag isn’t fully waterproof. - Plan your ride
Stick to routes you know, and be cautious in icy or gusty conditions. A bit of rain isn’t a problem, but safety first! Have a back up plan in case of mechanicals: a puncture repair kit you know how to use, someone you can call, or a bus. - Ride with others if you can
Sociable and sometimes safer, but solo rides are fine with extra care. - E-bike tips
Cold weather affects e-bike battery performance. Store and charge the battery indoors if you can, and start your ride smoothly to let the battery warm up before using higher assist modes.
