Important Technology Changes That May Affect You – What You Need to Know
16 June 2025
There are several upcoming changes to everyday technology that may impact older people or vulnerable residents across Midlothian. These changes are designed to improve services in the long run, but we know that for many, the transition can feel confusing or overwhelming.
We want to make sure local people are informed and supported through these changes. Below is an overview of what’s happening, why it matters, and where you can go for help.
Urgent Energy Advice – RTS Meters
Some older electricity meters are being phased out, and households using them need to act before 30 June 2025.
These meters use something called the Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS). After 30 June 2025, RTS will be switched off. If your meter isn’t upgraded in time, your heating and hot water may not work properly, and your energy bills could go up. You might also lose the ability to control your heating system.
To avoid this, households affected should have their RTS meter replaced with a smart meter. Energy suppliers will be contacting customers to arrange this upgrade, but we know that some people, particularly older residents, may be unsure about the change or face delays in getting appointments.
What to do:
- Your electricity supplier should contact you to arrange the upgrade. If you’re unsure, contact them directly.
- If you’re an E.ON Next customer, check your status and book an engineer here: E.ON Website
- For information across all suppliers, visit: Ofgem RTS Page
TV presenter Lorraine Kelly has made an easy-to-understand video about what RTS means:
Landline Changes – PSTN Switch Off
The traditional landline network – the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) – is being switched off by January 2027. Landline services are moving to a new, more reliable digital system.
Most people won’t need to do anything, but those with telecare alarms must make sure their equipment still works after the switch. This is especially important for people who rely on their alarm for safety or emergency support.
BT and Virgin Media O2, together with the UK Government, have launched a national campaign to raise awareness. If you support someone who uses telecare, make sure they know about this change.

Mobile Network Changes – 2G/3G Switch Off
By 2033, mobile networks will no longer offer 2G and 3G services. Some providers have already started switching them off. This change will help improve mobile coverage and make room for faster 4G and 5G services.
If you have an older mobile phone, it may stop working as these networks shut down. Now is a good time to check whether your device is up to date.
