16 days of activism against gender-based violence
24 November 2025
Violence against women and girls is preventable, and we can all play a part.
The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (25 November-10 December 10) is a global campaign that runs each year, calling on people and communities around the world to come together to end gender-based violence.

Violence against women and girls is a public health crisis, affecting almost one in three women in their lifetime according to the World Health Organisation. While physical harm can be the most visible aspect of gender-based violence, its impact on mental health and wellbeing can be devastating.
Gender-based violence and mental health
Gender-based violence doesn’t just leave physical scars, it can deeply affect our wellbeing. Survivors may experience:
- Anxiety and depression due to trauma and fear
- Post-traumatic stress (PTSD) from repeated exposure to violence
- Feelings of isolation and shame, which can make seeking help particularly difficult
- Lower self-esteem and confidence
The effects can continue long after the violence ends, making recovery an ongoing process.
When survivors receive timely mental health support, they are better equipped to rebuild their lives, advocate for themselves, and access support that empowers them and keeps them safe.
